Getting Ready—Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources

Save the Children

In expanding my horizons, I began searching assiduously for podcasts related to global issues in early childhood on the Save the Children and the Global Fund for Children websites. I wanted to find materials relating to the many challenges our children face worldwide, especially emerging from a very impactful discussion surrounding the Gonzales family: The first generation of the immigrant experience. The search was rather time-consuming, and the results provided limited resources. However, I listened to the Save the Children's Documentary repeatedly, which speaks about a family that suffered immense violence, poverty, and the desire to see their loved ones again. Elizabeth tried to make a run for it to El Salvador after several threats and attempts of being kidnapped. Besides, Bryan decided to join a gang, M13, to defend himself and take revenge on the teacher who raped his cousin. His mother cried night and day. Furthermore, to join a gang, there are certain things he must do to prove himself. These include selling drugs and being an extortionist. However, after he met and fell in love with a girl, who eventually became pregnant, he reconsidered his decisions and opted out of the gang. I believe the journey to a "better life" can be an extremely terrifying experience, but many individuals, including children, have decided that it a chance worth taking. Many people died along the way. I remember clearly from listening to that over 5000 people were waiting to ride the ferry one particular day. Experiences such as these affect all the domains of children. I was unable to find podcasts on the Global Fund for Children's website.

Pathways to Peace

After an extensive search of the aforementioned websites, I decided to look outside the box. And here I found the Pathways for Peace Broadcasting Inclusivity: N. Ireland Media Initiative for Children, Season 2019, Episode 2.

"Professor Connolly discussed his investigative role in the conflict and innovative early childhood development program in Northern Ireland, as well as plans for expansion of the program to other countries" (Early Childhood Peace Consortium, 2017).

In the podcast, Professor Paul Connelly revealed that early childhood development can lead to global peace. He focused on young children racism and racial prejudice in Northern Ireland, which cause children to look at skin colour from a very young age. However, because everyone looks the same, children do not notice the difference until later on in life. But discussions with his colleagues in the early childhood setting revealed otherwise as the professionals noted that they have encountered children reacting and enacting to cultural prejudices (Early Childhood Peace Consortium, 2017).

I have interfaced with podcasts on numerous occasions, but I have never taken the time out to learn about them. I have learned that podcasts are a series of audio files stored with a hosting company in expanding my horizons. The awesome thing about podcasts is that I can subscribe to them, making it easier to receive notification of new releases.

The dictionary definition of a podcast is:

"A digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new instalments of which can be received by subscribers automatically."

Audio on demand.

Online on-demand pre-recorded talk radio show where you can find someone talking about most subjects under the sun. Often, the hosts (and guests) are everyday people sharing their expertise and experiences.

Radio on your phone.

Free, online talk show on any topic you can imagine.

It’s a way to have audio content for specific subjects delivered to a device, so it’s easy to access.

It’s downloadable niche talk radio.

A pre-recorded radio show that is essentially on-demand on a multitude of platforms for consumption. It’s something that can either be vague or very specific in one’s interests.

It’s like Netflix for audio.

Downloadable radio on every subject imaginable!

Audio entertainment anywhere, anytime, about anything.

Audio discussions about any subject you can think of, and you can listen to them anytime that works for you.

Downloadable talk radio – but you ultimately choose the topics that you want to listen to.

On-demand audio recording focused on a specific theme or story, usually updated frequently.

Audiobooks for blogs.

An audio version of a blog that you can listen to anywhere

It is an audio show that you usually can’t find on the normal radio because it serves a niche, meaning really interesting to YOU.

The equivalent of self-publishing your book. It allows everyday people with great ideas to publish their ideas or thoughts in an audio format for others to enjoy without going through traditional media like radio.

Organization

I wanted to learn and share more about NAEYC because, before pursuing my Masters, I seized the opportunity of engaging in a few free pieces of training where I obtained certificates. However, I have selected the Zero to Three: Early Connections Last a lifetime website. This was so because I had completed an application to participate in the program through the Ministry of Education in my country approximately one year ago. So, yes, this program exists in my country, and this opportunity will broaden my horizons and allow me to be more informed on the program's operations. I have also selected this website because I find it very resourceful, appealing and easy to navigate. Also, I was able to subscribe to receive newsletters and updates. The site also consists of many podcasts, which will be enlightening for me. Their mission is to ensure that all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life. At the Zero to Three, the vision is to have a knowledgeable society and support infants and toddlers maximizing their full potential.

Questions/Tips

During my search for podcasts related to children and their families and the global issues they encounter daily, I came across podcasts that require payments and monthly fees. Did you have that experience? If not, what did you discover?
